Its that time of year! The weather is beginning to warm up during the day and you as a gardener are starting to feel the planting itch more than ever! Garden centers are now selling all the vegetable starts and people are buying them up and taking them home. But hold up! Before you go rushing back to the garden and placing these precious babies into the ground, let's talk about "hardening off", what it is and how we go about doing this to set our plants off on the road to success!
Hardening off is the process of exposing transplants (seedlings) gradually to outdoor conditions. It enables your transplants to withstand the changes in environmental conditions they will face when planted outside in the garden. It encourages a change from soft, succulent growth to a firmer, harder growth.
There is a thing called Transplant Shock and this is what we are trying to avoid!
