Rain, rain, go .... somewhere useful!
Ok so if you live pretty much anywhere south of Canada you are probably experiencing the same feeling that I am. ENOUGH OF THE RAIN!
However, my better senses come about me and I remember that July and August are just around the corner waiting with days of me begging for rain and checking plants almost hourly it seems. That got me to thinking about how I can turn these days of gloom into something that will be a shinning star in the months a head.
Have you ever thought of installing rain barrels? Since many of us are still spending the majority of our time at home now may be the time! There are many benefits of adding a rain barrel to you garden:
• Save Money. Reduce your water bill each month by catching and reusing rain water.
• Reduce Runoff Pollution & Erosion. Runoff from rains pick up soil, oil, pesticides, fertilizers and other contaminates and push them to other areas.
• Promote Plant & Soil Health. Leave the chlorine and other tap water additives out and let nature’s natural sources of minerals feed your soil.
• Conserve Water.
Some great instructions for constructing your own rain barrel can be found on the EPA website at https://cfpub.epa.gov/npstbx/files/KSMO_buildarainbarrel.pdf.
So consider a rain barrel project maybe even this week. There is plenty of rain right now to get you stared! Besides the dog days of summer will be here before you know it!
